How can I reuse or recycle … lots of sawdust/wood shavings?

sawdust250.jpgWe’ve had an email from Phillip Levenson:

I own a joinery manufacturers and i produce a lot of wood shavings which is mixed softwood and hardwood shavings and some dust i am struggling to dispose of it quicker than i can produce it.

I have a couple of people who take it from me who own horses. Do you know of any other ways of maybe recycling the shavings?

Untreated and unpainted wood can be composted but any reuse ideas?

We are looking to remove wood sawdust and fine shavings in the Midlands area. There maybe a small charge incurred if the collection is outside a 20 mile radius of Atherstone CV9 warks depending on the size of the removal

Adamlee – I know some farmers in the UK use it as bedding for their animals. Maybe you could see if any farmers or stables in your local area would like it? Don’t know much about agriculture in Singapore so this may not be of much use.

I know you can make firelighters from it by mixing it with melted candlewax and shaping into balls but unless you want to diversify your business this is more of a domestic use than industrial.

Alternatively I have seen sawdust “logs” on sale and the cat litter I buy is made of pressed sawdust – maybe there is a factory you could find that would make these things and take it off your hands.
