Recycling records into fun household items

Jeff Davis’ record bowlI’ve been thinking a lot about old vinyl records recently because of Renee’s great idea of using them as a canvas for art and because of Kimberly’s suggestion to poke holes in one to hold earrings – I think I’m going to combine the two ideas to make a cool jewellery display unit.

Anyway, thinking about these things reminded me of Jeff Davis’ fab creations from old vinyl. Under the Vinylux brand, he makes a range of cool household items – bowls, snack trays, picture frames – and other things like cuffs (below left) and notebooks.

I especially like the picture frame (below right) – because the record is re-used in two ways: the outside of the record becomes the frame and the inside bit is used as a coaster.

Trash People by HA Schult

HA Schult’s Trash PeopleMost of our recycling-stuff-into-art posts so far have been rather crafty so here is something at the more fine art end of the scale.

Despite the exhibition being around for a decade, I’ve some how managed to miss HA Schult’s ‘Trash People’.

This army of 1000 figures – made from crushed cans, electronic waste and other rubbish – has stood in public spaces in Rome, Barcelona, Moscow, New York, Paris – and even dotted along the Great Wall of China.

The pictures show you the detail but it takes a video (or the very long shots on Schult’s website) to show you the scale – the amount of the figures. The video below shows someone walked around the Cologne, Germany exhibition.

A very cool display – and hopefully one that got people thinking more creatively about their rubbish, or at least thinking about not producing so much.

Recycling all sorts of things in a crafty way

Egg box sewing kitsContinuing in our semi-regular series of crafters making cool things by recycling and reusing random stuff, let me introduce Lynsey of SwirlyArts:

I saw over on your blog that you wanted to know what people are making out of old rubbish and stuff that is normally recycled. Well I make lots of things in my Etsy store out of products that are destined for the recycle bin and I thought you might like to check them out. I turn egg boxes into sewing kits, old maps and magazines into envelopes, gift tags, badges and stickers and I make chicken shaped doorstops from second hand fabric.

All very cute – and inspiring – stuff. Browsing through Lynsey’s Flickr profile, I particularly liked the Lego box gift tags (so colourful) and the old books (in her case a children’s German dictionary) into envelopes. I, of course, also love the doorstop chickens – because who couldn’t? ;)

How can I reuse or recycle washing machine drums?

Washing machine drum turned into an ottomanWe’ve had an email from Nathalie, telling us about the fab ottoman she made from an old washing machine drum (links includes full instructions). She also links to another site where one has been turned into a floor lamp – very cool.

Involving less crafts, I’ve also seen them used as planters in allotments (since the holes let excess water drain away) and an outside toy bin in a garden – so they’re obviously versatile little chaps but has anyone else got any other suggestions?

(Oh, and we got a mention on Zaproot yesterday – a cool eco-show. If you’re already here, you already know about us of course but still, it’s nice to be mentioned.)
