How can I reuse or recycle old sports trophies?

sport trophyWe’ve had a message on our suggest-an-item page from Kaye:

what can i do to reuse/create something useful out of old sports trophies? i have only seen ideas for coat racks, but i already have one. these are the “plastic-people frozen in place and mounted on a block of stone” type ones.

i’ve also heard about giving them to a trophy shop to recycle. but what else??

Coat rack = awesome! As I mentioned on Things To Do Today last Friday, we need a new coat rack – if either John or I had ever achieved any sporting prowess, you can pretty much guarantee that’s what I’d be doing with our trophies around about now. Unfortunately we both preferred sitting to running about on fields and they don’t give out anywhere near as many trophies for that.

Anyway though, Kaye’s not up for a coatrack so any other ideas?

    Use them as garden decos

I found your blog (now bookmarked!) by searching for how to recycle acrylic trophies. The ones I’m trying to recycle are just a cube of acrylic, without any real weight or fun shapes. Since I am in the U.S., I did find an artist who recycles acrylic of all types into art and furniture. His site is aaronthomas.com and acrylic to be recycled can be mailed to 33047 Calle Aviador Unit A, San Juan Capistrano, C.A. 92675.

As someone in the trophy business, I would recommend you donate them to a youth organization like yogahz commented. Or you could maybe make a wind chime out of several of the figures.

instead of a coatrack, you could make a key holder like the one made of doll parts on this site (that was this site, right?). I guess it’s really just the same thing but if you think of it as a key holder you have a reason to make two..

A friend of my replaced an old metal auto maker logo that stood up on the front end of the hood of his van with an old trophy figurine. Not only does it look cooler that advertising a brand of vehicle, it makes it way easier to identify his non-conspicuous van in a parking lot full of vehicles.

As someone who spent many years running a swimming club I too would suggest that you donate them to a club or youth organization.

Facilities, insurances and registrations cost a fortune and are a major cost so things like trophies are way down the list but are a great incentive to working hard to achieve improvement. The looks on the children’s faces when they win through sheer hard work and determination is wonderful.
