How can I reuse or recycle … USB memory sticks?

usb_memory_stick.jpgWe’ve had an email from Peter Hughes asking simply:

How can I recycle memory sticks?

I’m presuming he means USB memory fobs and not the bits of strips of memory used inside computers – but when broken, the latter make fun keyrings for geeks.

I had an idea of incorporating a small USB stick into a necklace – as a pendant – or other jewellery but I intended these to be functional rather than just decorative.

So any suggestions on ways to recycle or reuse them if they’re broken?

How about writing on the side of them and using them as plant labels? :)

if they can be crushed down to 1/2″ to 1″ pieces they make okay ground cover for flower gardens and/or around bases of trees. it will keep weeds down, moisture in, and will break down into simple calcium over time.

pull apart for the funky little circuit board inside and make a pendant or earrings. the plastic bits can fit back together..add some wheels and you have a futuristic toy!

If they’re still working ok, they’re dead useful. Many a time I have been saved when my printers not working by just bringing in my report on a flash drive. =)
