How can I reuse or recycle … leftover bits of turkey?

Christmas tree made of lightA whole load of people are going to have whole load of leftover turkey later on today. Turkey meat and bones probably; giblets and flappy neck skin maybe.

Has anyone got any recipes or other suggestions of how the great Christmas leftover turkey mountain can be used up?

(And if you’re interested: we’ve already covered greetings/Christmas cards and wrapping paper elsewhere, if you want suggestions on how to reuse that sort of thing : ) )

How can I reuse or recycle (or rescue) … dried up pens?

pens_in_a_pot180.jpgIn a completely un-me moment of organised and forward planning, I was looking for a pen the other day to write something on shopping list. I turned to the pot of random pens that I put together in another completely un-me moment of organised and forward planning. Unfortunately given the long time-lapse between those two periods, all the ink in all those pens had completely dried up. I ended up scratching letter-shaped holes in the shopping list instead. Useful.

So what can I do with all those old pens? Can I rescue them? Can I reuse their skins? Most of them are cheap (usually promotional) biros but there are also some felt tip types. Any suggestions?

How can I reuse or recycle … breakfast cereal gone chewy?

Breakfast cerealHad an email from Tori:

Hi! I read your blog about crackers that have gone soggy and I have the same problem with breakfast cereal. I go through phases of eating breakfast at home and always like to have something in, but it always seem to go soggy and chewy between phases.

I was wondering if any of your readers have any suggestions about what I can do with old cornflakes? I also eat Shreddies and bran flakes too. Thanks!

So any suggestions?

How can I reuse or recycle … old cutlery?

Knife and fork
We got into our biennial toasted-cheese-sandwich obsession last weekend and while we were on top of a kitchen cabinet hunting down the toastie maker last weekend, we found a tub full of old random cheap cutlery.

We’ve acquired these random odds and sods over the years but they were superseded a couple of years ago by cutlery that

  1. hangs from a little hook thing because we don’t have any drawers in the kitchen, and
  2. doesn’t bend when eat something as solid as, oh, soup.

They’ve mostly got plastic handles but of all different colours and styles from different sets. I suspect the best thing I can do with them, even in their wonky bent state, would be to give them to a charity shop or Freecycle them but thought I’d see if anyone has any cool ideas for other reuses for them first. So suggestions?

How can I reuse or recycle … thin sheets of packing foam?

Thin sheets of foamWe bought a flat-packed side table from Ikea a few weeks ago (to be my home office so my junk doesn’t pile up right across the living room) and its individual flat pieces were wrapped in thin sheets of foam to stop them scratching each other in transit.

The sheets are about 50cm wide and 1m in length, but only about 1mm thick so pretty see-through.

We don’t really have anything we need to pack up at the moment and while I’m not opposed to keeping it around until we have something to pack, if we can use it for anything else in the meantime, that would be good. So any suggestions?
