How can I reuse or recycle … old potatoes?

PotatoesI bought a big bag of “reduced for a quick sale” potatoes a few of weeks ago and despite eating a good number of the starchy tubers, there are a few left at the bottom of the bag going quite, quite green.

Potatoes are one of the few things that grow in our clay-y north-facing garden so normally I’d happy plant out old ones and wait for new potatoes to grow in their place but with the weather as it is at the moment, I don’t fancy their chances if it gets suddenly frosty – or my chances of not being blown away and/or drowned while trying to dig a hole for them.

So are there any other things I can do with them instead of planting them out/winging them into the compost bin?

How can I reuse or recycle … dried branches of rosemary?

RosemaryJohn’s Grandma grows all sorts of fruits and vegetables in her garden and has a number of huge herb plants and a few weeks ago, John came home from there with a number of branches hacked off from one of the rosemary bushes.

The branches had actually been cut off for someone else to replant in their own garden but nothing had come of it and by the time we got hold of them, the branches and attached “leaves” dried out.

We have far more than we could ever use for culinary purposes (particularly since we don’t often use rosemary in our cooking) so are looking for other ideas for using it up. Any suggestions?

How can I reuse or recycle … shiny chocolate wrappers?

chocolate_wrapping250.jpgAt this time of year, a lot people end up eating more than their of own body weight in individually wrapped chocolates and as pleasurable as it is to undo all those little tiny chocolately presents, it’s a whole lot of packaging going to waste too.

Around here (and at my mum and dad’s house), said wrappers instantly become cat toys but ones that are only interesting until the point the cat actually catches them (fickle cats that they are).

So what else can we do with them once the cats are bored? I’m thinking particularly those ones that fold out to be squares of transparent plastic or foil because they seem to be the most obviously reusable but any suggestions are welcome, of course.

How can I reuse or recycle … leftover bits of turkey?

Christmas tree made of lightA whole load of people are going to have whole load of leftover turkey later on today. Turkey meat and bones probably; giblets and flappy neck skin maybe.

Has anyone got any recipes or other suggestions of how the great Christmas leftover turkey mountain can be used up?

(And if you’re interested: we’ve already covered greetings/Christmas cards and wrapping paper elsewhere, if you want suggestions on how to reuse that sort of thing : ) )

How can I reuse or recycle … breakfast cereal gone chewy?

Breakfast cerealHad an email from Tori:

Hi! I read your blog about crackers that have gone soggy and I have the same problem with breakfast cereal. I go through phases of eating breakfast at home and always like to have something in, but it always seem to go soggy and chewy between phases.

I was wondering if any of your readers have any suggestions about what I can do with old cornflakes? I also eat Shreddies and bran flakes too. Thanks!

So any suggestions?
