How can I reuse or recycle really heavy rope?

ropeWe’ve had an email from Lou:

There is a load of really heavy old rope in our garage, god knows where it came from. It’s a bit mossy but seems in ok condition, we just don’t know what to use it for because it’s 4″ thick!

Unless you’ve got a big boat to tie to a quayside or something, I imagine you’d be best reusing it as a weight or a border in the garden – if you ever have to cover anything with plastic sheeting, it could be used stretched out or curled up to stop it blowing away or to stop lawns creeping into flower beds.

Any other ideas?

Lucky you- What about using it along the top a row of posts-(recycled) and then train roses/climbers along it.

Apparently you have to soak it in water first, otherwise first time it rains it all tenses up.

  3. You could thread the rope through holes in posts or stakes to create a rope fence for your garden. If you know anyone with children, you could give the rope to them to make a rope swing/tyre swing with. If the rope is not strong enough for that, see if you could wind the rope around a log/tree stump/large branch, attach the rope in place (using non-toxic glue, perhaps?) and give it to an animal shelter for use as a cat scratching post. You could use the rope to suspend large hanging baskets or flower pots in the kitchen or in the porch or driveway.

Um… I’ve just bought 10 metres of this for a tug-of-war match at a birthday party… Maybe that’s where yours came from too!

    Hey,

Do you still have the rope? I have a use for it and I would be willing to purchase it from you. What is the correct term for rope like that?

If you have heavy rope and want to recycle it, it’s easy! Athletes are using heavy rope for a variety of exercises. If it’s new, check with indoor athletic clubs and baseball training facilities. If they don’t buy it, they would allow you to post some “for sale” signs. If it’s used and dirty, people like me would like to use it in their yards and be happy to pick it up for FREE or for a low price since these are expensive. To see some of the exercises, see some video demonstrations easily found by searching the internet for heavy rope exercises.

1.Glue the rope around plastic bucket to make pretty planting pot.
    2. Glue it to the piece of plywood for an adorable door rug.
    3. Hang it securely off the ceiling so kids can clime it.

Nail it onto a fence or gate in the shapes of your house numbers.

Use it to hang tire-swing off the tree. Kids will love it.

Hang it among fence palls for instant fence.
