How can I reuse or recycle old movie posters?

Film postersWe’ve had an email from Nichola:

My husband works in a cinema and has brought home a heap of old movie posters for me to recycle into something else. But what? Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Given Nichola had a link to the wonderful Etsy in her email signature, the first ideas I had were crafty – borrowing Ecoist‘s idea of making them into handbags or wallets or making some fun art by weaving strips of different posters together. Any more crafty ideas?

Or what about more practical ones?

try ebay. lots of people collect them.

frames them for some cool art

  2. Andy says:

How about using them to make personalized birthday cards, especially if the film came out when the person was born!

  3. Nichola says:

Thanks Trish and Andy for your ideas. I’m looking more towards doing something crafty with them. We already have dozens framed on our walls, especially old horror movie ones. I’m going to look into the bag idea and maybe cards and notebook covers. Any more ideas?

I would love to take some of them off your hands – I just started collecting and would really appreciate the opportunity. Please contact me “Honest_Italian_1@yahoo.com”

    Waugh!

Seriously, DON’T RECYCLE THEM. They are worth A LOT OF MONEY. Sell them on eBay, and I guarantee that you will be able to raise a lot of money for other crafty projects.

  6. Ebay would be my first suggestion, but if youd don’t want to make loads of money, i’m sure they would make interesting collages.

I’d also suggest eBay, Freecycle, etc, because people will reprint posters of movies they liked to get them.

That said, if they’re for movies that weren’t very good, they can make festive wrapping paper!

students love old posters to decorate their apartments, they will be charged $ if they hang a regular framed picture using nails.

    Nichola,

If you still have those old movie posters….may I suggest the following?

Would you kindly send the posters to me? I, in turn, have a friend in “the business” who can obtain signatures from the stars in those posters. The posters are then donated to my local Humane Society to be used as a fund-raising vehicle for items/funds desperately needed. You, in turn, will receive a tax write off for the donation as they are a 503 C corporation. Everybody wins.

Please email me to further discuss. Thanks for your consideration.

Hey there! I don’t know if you’ve already tried this, but you might want to check out Pinterest.com. It’s my favorite place to be and they might have some crafty ideas for old posters. There’s even an app for it. I’m looking to recycle old posters that say things like “Chase Your Dreams” with horses on them from when I was younger. My crafty friend that showed me Pinterest used old celeb magazines and cut pages into about three inch tall strips and maybe one inch wide, rolled them, and glued them to a shoe box for cool looking storage. Hope you find something! :)
