How can I reuse or recycle … orange peel?

An orange, half peeled(Sorry for the missing post yesterday – our internet connection died. Boo.)

Anyway, orange peel. I know large quantities are bad for compost heaps and wormeries because the worms don’t tend to be fond of it (particularly when it’s fresh) but it’s such a shame to just throw it away.

Any suggestions for it or related peelings?

How can I reuse or recycle … old cushion stuffing?

A pile of cushionsWe have a number of cushions and pillows around the house that are not exactly cushioning or pillowy any more. For want of a better word, I shall describe them as clumpy – the stuffing has clumped together into uncomfortable lumps – and no amount of fluffing (…that I can do before my arm gets tired) will redeem them.

It usually seems to be one of those situations that gets worse over time – which preventative regular fluffing can keep at bay – but washing them certainly seems to speed up the process.

Any ideas of how to bring them back to life? Or how to reuse the cushion corpse once it has passed over?

How can I reuse or recycle greetings/Christmas cards?

Greeting cards
Happy Birthday to me,
Happy Birthday to me,
Happy Birthday to me-eeeeee,
Happy Birthday to me.

For no particular reason, why not let’s think about how someone can reuse or recycle greetings cards, like, you know, Christmas cards or perhaps birthday cards? And while we’re thinking about it, I’ll eat this gigantic cake.

Hurrah for nothing whatsoever of note happening 27 years ago today : )

How can I reuse or recycle audio cassette tapes?

Audio cassette tapeI’ve recently been clearing out loads of old stuff from my obsessive teen fandom of a certain, ahem, fluffy-haired band. Ebay is currently in the process of loving me because I’m halfway there, selling my previously collected tshirts, vinyl and assorted memorabilia. (Some might even say, I’m living on a prayer with all the proceeds.)

Given my obsession started before I got a cd player in my bedroom, I bought all their early albums on cassette tapes and just about stretched them to breaking point with repeat playing. While the vinyl has lasted – and sold – well, I fear the cassette tapes are beyond the point of passing them on to someone else.

So what else can I do with them? Is the tape reusable? And if so, any ideas?

Best Suggestions

  • Pass Them On: Some people still use them – for both listening to and recording – so it’s probably worth checking to see whether your local charity/thrift shop still accepts them or offering them on Freecycle. Some charities also collect them for reuse for recording spoken newsletters and the like – see the comments below.
  • Reuse: Tapes are very retro-stylish at the moment and people are using the plastic bits to make belt buckles, bags and other decorations. The tape can be knitted or crocheted too.
  • Recycle: The tapes are electronic waste so they should be collected by your local authority in their e-waste bins.

How can I reuse or recycle … old mop heads?

Mop head against red brick wallSince there was such a positive response to Em’s sponge scourer query, I’ll post about something I’d also worried about the gackness level: mop heads.

We’re not ardent moppers but have to change the mop heads themselves quite a lot because the coarse and often dirty nature of our floors means that after a couple of uses, they look really quite sad and/or not the type of thing you want to use when ‘cleaning’. We swap and change between using cloth mops, string mops and those new-fangled-super-dooper-cost-£3-a-time mopheads but none of them seem to be particularly hard wearing.

Any suggestions on what we can do when with them once they’ve been relegated from their rightful role?
