How can I reuse or recycle … saucepan lids?

saucepan lidWe’ve had an email from Sue, asking:

What can I do with spare saucepan lids? I’ve just cleaned out my cupboard and I’ve got loads of old ones that don’t match any of my current pans – some of them are probably older than my teenage children!

Well, firstly Sue, you can give them to me! We’ve only got one lid so have to juggle it around if we’re cooking multiple items that need lids. There are probably a large number of people in a similar position so you could probably Freecycle them in your local area. Lids are great for making cooking more efficient – saves all that excess heat escaping into the kitchen – and recycling them between people that need them means it better for the environment on two counts.

But aside from that, any other suggestions?

There are sites online that sell replacement parts for dishes, pans, cutlery, etc. I’ve also seen pieces, such as lids, one dish or cup, for sale on ebay. It helps if you know the manufacturer or collection name, but a good photo and accurate measurements may do the trick.

This is not actually a tip for recycling, but I thought it was worth mentioning because I saw it today after reading this post yesterday.

    A universal, multi-size lid? Brilliant!

Paint the glass, use as sun catcher. Use to make unique window in the wall.
If it is small enough, glue it to the bathroom wall and hang a towel, or a robe.

You could hand them in to a charity which collects things to furnish homes for those who need help. They may have a use for them!

Drill holes in them, add some old forks and spoons and make them into wind chimes. They are so cute. My kids and I made several a few years back, however we have given them all away…Time to hit the rummage sales and make more I guess!!

Remove the knob, attach a clock mechanism and hands, and you’ll never be late again!!
