I have some video tapes that I want to get rid of, but don’t want to just chuck them in the refuge collection. There has to be someone out there that can put them to good use. Most people have DVDs and have no use for videotapes.

    Many thanks

Tapes UK Ltd is a company based in bristol and will take all your scrap VHS, DVD/CD.

We have machines that will dismantal the tape, we then seporate all the different parts, ie: plastic shell, magnetic tape and metal components, then each material will go off to other companies around the world to be recycled. Nothing will go to land fill.

  12. Steven Sacks says:

I have about 100 VHS tapes on which my mother recorded about three movies each (most from the 1940s and 1950s) between 1982 and her death in 1997. I don’t want to discard them, but donate them but do not know which nursing homes and other institutions in my area still show movies on VCRs-I live in Bergen County, NJ. Some places I checked don’t have VCRs. Is there any way of finding out places that still do, aside from calling every place?

I live in Coventry and i’m a big collector of any pre recorded video films released prior to 1984. If anyone has any of these, released by such companies as Intervision, Go Video, VFP, VIP, Hokushin, Vampix, Cinehollywood, Videomedia, Merlin, Videospace, Brent Walker, and many many others, i would be very interested in them.

I’m more than happy to pick up around the Coventry, Nuneaton area.

    Thanks.

  26. ANTHONY HAYES says:

THE REALITY IS THAT NO ONE WANTS THE THINGS.
THE “CHARITY” IN BRISTOL IS A RIP OFF. NONE OF THE CHARITY SHOPS , EVEN THOSE MENTIONED ON THIS SITE WILL TAKE THEM.
IF THEY WERE ANY USE AT ALL YOUR LOCAL COUNCIL RECYCLING CENTRE WOULD HAVE A FACILITY FOR THEM – THEY DON’T !
CHUCK ‘EM IN YOUR DUSTBIN AND FORGET ABOUT THEM

    REALIST – ANTHONY HAYES

    • ali says:

Our local RSPCA takes them, especially kiddies films, and today’s Wright Stuff Show’s researchers found 60% of UK homes still have a vcr. As for ‘dumping’ them in the bin – this is irresponsible and if your council does not offer a solution then campaign to get something done! the planet can do without these toxic products leeching into the water table!!

      • Simon says:

Hi – we have circa 80 childrens videos – disney/cartoons etc; can’t find any charity locally (cheshire) who will take them – which RSPCA centre is it – I’ll send them

  27. Susie Barwick says:

I have 2 video recorders and loads of tapes, mostly for children – surely there is somewhere in Africa (with electricity) that can take these for children who never see anything! Who is out there or should we somehow all get together and ship them out!

    • Dan says:

I agree with you Susie that’s what I thought would be a good idea, just because we are all switching to dvd/bluray somewhere in 3rd world they are prob not. Really the movie companies should provide a collection service from retail when a new format comes out. Be the responsible thing to do, CD’s prob be next to go. Best bet I think is to get media involved and then could ship thousands of VHS tapes over to africa prob along with a bunch of VHS movies and make their day!

  28. Sharon R says:

I live in Coventry, downsizing and desperately need to get rid of about 20 – 30 video tapes. Does anyone want them? Do as you wish with them. I just don’t want to add them to the local landfill, much rather them go to a recycling facility/charity any advice or suggestions would be very welcome.

  29. mary says:

I too have lots of children’s videos. I am going to ring around some
children’s homes in Manchester, but I guess they also have upgraded to DVD. It is so sad that they will all go to waste as originally they cost so much.

    Mary.

Been in contact with several organisations and seems except charity shops nothing except recycling available.EMS http://www.ems-europe.co.uk/vhs_recycling.php?gclid=CMX5wq7B8K8CFUsMtAodbH9TVA
If your council provide the service be best bet of disposal although sahme about not being able to be used better.

  31. rosie says:

I have quite a few videos too, mainly Morse & 1st/2nd World War. Tried Freecycle in my area but no response. Charity shops aren’t interested even though some of mine are not available on dvd, at least not on Amazon. Any ideas welcome.

  32. Mark says:

I had a load of old VHS tapes and found a company called Environmental Media Solutions who recycle VHS. If you are interested their website is http://www.ems-europe.co.uk

  33. shanksy says:

i have about 300 vidios some are boxed sets i need to get rid of them as soon as possible my son used to collect them now he has no use for them any ideas

  34. Martin says:

less and less charity shops are taking VHS videos they are not selling, and a lot of other charity shops take them and may only put a few on the shelves, the rest go in the bins at the back of the shop, which end up in landfill anyway, they can’t afford to send them to any re-cycling companies , I know this as I help out at a couple of shops. There should have been a government initiative to sort this, think of the millions if not billions of videos going into landfill, it’s horrifying!

  35. Max says:

If anyone has any old video tapes(vhs or beta) in the Leeds or surrounding area I would be happy to take them off your hands, I am using old tapes to make furniture/art.

  39. Michael says:

Unlike most people, I’ve never stopped watching and recording on video tape even though I have a DVD player and many DVDs, but I’m lucky that I have a big room to store them in. Recently I’ve been posting wanted ads on freecycle for used video tapes as I love finding programs and films that you can’t get anywhere else. I’m a huge film fan and so far I’ve seen lots of films for free that just aren’t shown on TV anymore. I only wish I’d thought of it before so many people got rid of them. My dream is to find someone with a huge collection of old, slightly obscure movies (1920s-80s) and old documentaries (Arena, Imagine, Storyville, South Bank, Scene by Scene) who wants rid of them. I would even pay something for them! I’m not as interested in prerecorded videos unless they’re fairly obscure or rare. If anyone has a big collection and would like to past it on, I live in the Tyne valley. My email is shouldabroughtasweater@ymail.com. Thanks

    • Philip Matthews says:

Hi, are you still interested in VHS cassettes? I’ve got a load that might suit you, lots of old documentaries and films, though not particularly well labelled I must admit. Were abouts are you?

  43. Kate says:

I have about 30 video tapes. Some are pre-recorded (mainly children’s films). Others are blank or recorded from the TV. I am in Warwickshire and don’t want to send these for landfill. Does anyone want them….. Please.

  45. Karen says:

Oxfam took my old VHS tapes just today. I was told they would recycle them.

  46. Sheila says:

YMCA charity shop in Chelmsley Wood took my pre-recorded VHS tapes. They didn’t want the ones that have home movies on, or recordings off the TV.

  47. Audrey Brown says:

Is there anyone in the Thanet, Canterbury or Ashford area who could recycle or would take 200+ video tapes with TV recordings on? I’d like to dispose of them environmetally and not put them in the bin.

  48. Sue says:

You’ll have a problem. Try a few at a time at local charity shops. It’s more difficult if they’re not pre-recorded.

  49. Kazilla says:

I live in Somerset does anyone know where I can take my VHS videos. Many Disney and other titles. British heart foundation would not take them.

  50. Anonymous says:
