Privacy & Cookies

This website uses cookies to personalise content and ads, to provide social media features and to analyse our traffic.

This statement will also tell you how Recycle This collect and process your personal data through non-automated means.

Cookies

1. What are cookies?

A cookie is a small text file that is downloaded when the user visits a website. It allows the website to recognise that user’s device (for example, their computer or phone) and store some information about the user’s preferences or past actions.

Almost every site on the internet uses cookies to provide a better user experience, to make their sites easier to navigate, to provide personalised content or adverts, and to gather basic information.

2. How are cookies used on Recycle This?

We use cookies on Recycle This for three main purposes:

  • providing personalised or specific content including adverts
  • providing social media features (for example, the “share” buttons)
  • analysing web traffic to the site (for example, what type of things people are searching for on the site, and what web browser they are using, so we can ensure that the site works best for everyone).

We use Google Adsense for the advertising and Google Analytics for the web traffic analysis.

2a. Google Adsense

We use Google Adsense to provide the advertising on Recycle This. Google Adsense uses cookies to tailor its adverts based on your behaviour across the web. They may show you adverts related to: other websites you’ve visited either on your current web browser or while logged into Google on other devices/browsers; previous interactions you’ve had with Google Adsense adverts or services; or general activity on your Google profile include YouTube and Google+. They will NOT track any personally identifiable information (like your name) without your explicit consent and they also do not use information related to “sensitive categories” such as race, religion, sexual orientation, or health.

You can view or change the types of adverts that Google displays in your web browser in Google’s Ad Preference Manager: http://www.google.com/ads/preferences/

If you would prefer to opt out of the Adsense’s interest-based adverts, you can find out more information about how to do so within Google’s Privacy Policy: http://www.google.com/policies/technologies/ads/

2b. Google Analytics

We use Google Analytics to analyse our web traffic. Google Analytics uses cookies to collect information and generate reports about how people are using our website. This is NOT personally identifiable (like your name) and does NOT track your behaviour elsewhere on the web – it is simply about how you are using OUR website. This information is NOT shared between lots of different websites (just us and Google).

More information about how Google Analytics collects, uses and stores data, can be found in their Analytics Data Privacy & Security policy: https://support.google.com/analytics/answer/6004245

If you would like to stop your browsing information being collected and stored by Google across the whole web, you can download a plug-in to opt-out: https://tools.google.com/dlpage/gaoptout?hl=en

2c. Cookies by other third party websites

We sometimes embed video or other content from websites such as YouTube.
We also allow you to share links to content on our site with other websites by the use of “Share” buttons. As we have no control over the cookies set by these websites, please look at the relevant third party websites for more information:

3. Controlling Cookies

You can use the settings of your web browser to stop any website from storing any cookies on your computer or other device. This may lead to parts of our website not working correctly.

You can find out more how to do this within the ‘Help’ function of your browser.

Non-Automated Collection

If you make a suggestion, you’re invited to include your name, email address and website details. You don’t have to include this information but if you do, your name will be published on the site alongside your comment, with a link to your website if you supply one. Your email address will not be published anywhere on the site: we very occasionally use them to contact people individually about their comments (usually just to provide follow up information if requested) but would never use them for any sort of bulk-mailing/spamming purposes and only keep them on file for as long as necessary. We certainly would never give or sell your details to anyone else for spamming or any other purposes.

Similarly if you send us an email, for example a suggestion for the site, we will not do anything untoward with your information: if we feature your suggestion on the site, we’ll mention your first (or preferred name) and will link to a web address if requested, but we will not publish your email address. The email itself will be kept on file as appropriate for our records but after sending an individual reply to you (if appropriate), we won’t use your email address or details for any other purposes.

None of this information will be shared with other third parties and will remain confidential, accessible only by those who have a legitimate involvement within the Recycle This project.

To prevent unauthorized access, maintain data accuracy and ensure the correct use of information, we have put in place appropriate physical, electronic, and managerial procedures to safeguard and secure the information we collect online.

Changes to this statement/policy

This statement and therefore the ways in which your data may be processed can be changed from time to time. Any changes will only be notified via this web page but changes will only apply to data provided from then on.

If you have any queries relating to the privacy statement then please contact us.
