Best way to recycle anything is to allow someone to use it. Garage sales are great for this. Put it in a free box and it will be recycled for its intended use.
Rather than throw odd things away I collect them in a box and put them out at a yard sale. Things you would never think someone would want too.

Use it as a keychain. Someone gave me a spare key to their home in case of emergency, etc. on a bottle opener keychain. I also throw one in our spare cooler and picnic basket in case we need it.

Next party you go to, take them. Well, a few of them anyway. I never seem to have enough of them when I have a party, and I have about 4 of them. Chances are they'll be MIA by the end of the night anyway. :)

Take them to a painting school or local university. Between helping open tubes/cans of paint, or just helping the pubs do business, they will be used.
