I plan to use old racks in drawers when I move into my new kitchen (drawers built for the racks). When we first moved into the current place and didn't have the dishwasher hooked up or the cabinets cleaned and lined, I stored dishes in the d.w. You can store an incredible amount in a d.w. You just put multiple plates per section, etc. They're not all spaced out for cleaning.

My husband uses an old dishwasher plate rack that he got at a yard sale (for free) to hold LPs near his turntables.
