When we first moved into the current place and didn't have the dishwasher hooked up or the cabinets cleaned and lined, I stored dishes in the d.w. You can store an <em>incredible</em> amount in a d.w. You just put multiple plates per section, etc. They're not all spaced out for cleaning.
